"National honor is national property of the highest value."
James Monroe, former President of the USA.

With the 21st Century and the "War on Terror" we have entered a new era with major changes in both US domestic and foreign policy.
- The Bush Administration's response to global threats, both real and perceived.
- Creation of the Department of Homeland Security.
- The Patriot Act legislation.
- Creation of a new class of prisoner that re-defines the rules for imprisonment, torture, and tribunals.
- The justification of the War in Iraq as part of the "War on Terror".
- The re-evaluation of US immigration policy.

These events and changes pushed me to re-examine the US flag and its symbolism. Living in Switzerland since August 2003 presented a unique opportunity for me to watch from afar and reflect on the impact of these changes.

I am a US Citizen, born in Illinois on a US Air Force base.
My ancestors immigrated from Europe and Canada starting in the mid-19th until the early 20th century.
